📰 An article has just been published in *La Repubblica* about a project involving our researcher Luciano Bosso, in collaboration with Green Legacy Hiroshima, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research, and the Botanical Gardens of Naples and Portici.
🍃For the first time, seeds from the Hibakujumoku (a Japanese term literally meaning “bombed trees” – essentially the trees that survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima 81 years ago) will be germinated in Campania.
🪴 We were lucky enough to receive seeds from no fewer than four species: Ginkgo biloba, Cinnamomum camphora, Platanus orientalis and Celtis sinensis.
🧑🔬 As the article explains, the seeds have been entrusted to the loving and expert care of the staff at the two botanical gardens in Campania, and we are now just waiting for the first seedlings to emerge.
☮️ The Hibakujumoku are now regarded as living monuments, and their seeds are distributed around the world as ambassadors of remembrance and peace.

🔬♻️ ISAFOM research into safer and more sustainable compost
We are proud to share this news from the CNR, which highlights a significant scientific achievement by Mirco Cucina, a researcher at CNR-ISAFOM.
The study, carried out in collaboration with the University of Milan, introduces an innovative analytical protocol capable of accurately identifying plastics and microplastics present in compost, distinguishing them from compostable plastics and other biodegradable substances.
A decisive step forward for food safety, soil quality and the sustainability of agri-food supply chains.

An innovative methodology developed jointly by CNR-ISAFOM and the University of Milan makes it possible to accurately detect the presence of persistent pollutants – such as plastics and microplastics – in compost, distinguishing them from other biodegradable substances such as compostable plastics. The analytical protocol, described in the journal ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering, will promote greater food safety and sustainability in supply chains.

The #climate change is leading to a significant reorganisation of Europe’s forests, affecting the distribution and competitiveness of the main tree species. An international study published in *Communications Earth & Environment* shows how ongoing climate change may favour certain deciduous broad-leaved trees whilst, at the same time, reducing the prevalence of numerous currently dominant conifers.
The CNR-ISAFOM contributed to the research, with researchers Alessio Collalti and Daniela Dalmonech working on the development and analysis of the ecological models used. The simulations indicate that, by 2100, up to 25% of European forests could see a change in their dominant species, with implications for biodiversity, carbon sequestration capacity, water use and ecosystem productivity.
The study, which draws on advanced artificial intelligence and deep learning techniques, is one of the most comprehensive analyses ever conducted on competition between forest species in Europe and provides valuable insights for developing management and climate adaptation strategies aimed at enhancing ecosystem resilience.

Forest Modelling Lab.Climate change will reshape Europe’s forests.
It could profoundly alter the competitive balance among Europe’s main tree species, favouring certain deciduous broad-leaved trees and disadvantaging many conifers that currently dominate vast areas of the continent. This is revealed in a study published in 'Communications Earth & Environment', the result of an international collaboration involving, for Italy, the Isafom Institute of the #Cnr
