🌳 Castelporziano becomes a Living Lab for environmental research: President Mattarella and the CNR leadership present 🌍
On Thursday 22 May, in the evocative setting of the Castelporziano Presidential Estate, the inauguration ceremony was held for the sustainable forestation project that will transform over 300 hectares into a new green lung on the outskirts of Rome.
The event was attended by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, the Minister of the Environment Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, the Mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri and top representatives of the Italian scientific world.
📌 These included Silvano Fares, Director of the CNR Institute for Mediterranean Agricultural and Forestry Systems (CNR-ISAFoM), who took part in the discussion with the Head of State along with other leading researchers from the National Research Council.
The project, supported by the PNRR - Next Generation EU, will create a real Living Lab: an open-air scientific laboratory where innovative methods of sustainable forest management will be tested and valuable data will be collected to address the challenges of climate change.
A virtuous example of collaboration between institutions and the scientific community to build a greener and more resilient future. 🌱

📆On 31 March, the project coordination meeting was held at the ISAFoM headquarters in Portici. Canaseme - Seed Chain of Excellence
A meeting full of ideas, discussion and collaboration, which saw the active participation of all partners involved.
🔬The project, financed by the Campania Region in the framework of the 2014/2020 RDP - Measure 16, Submeasure 16.1.2, is part of the path to strengthen the Campania AKIS (Focus Area 2) and aims at innovating the agricultural sector through the agro-technique of industrial hemp, for the production of high quality seeds, thanks to the application of advanced technologies.
🍃The CNR ISAFoM is a partner in the PSR CANASEME project and is actively engaged in the precision phenotyping of Campania hemp seed for the improvement of germinability, contributing concretely to innovation and the valorisation of local resources.
👩🔬🧑🏻🔬Durante the meeting were Dr Giacomo Mele, Dr Laura Gargiulo and Dr Sabrina Maria Marsala. The latter reported on the important results obtained so far, emphasising the value of the research activities conducted and paving the way for the next developments of the project.

🇬🇧🍃 This morning, our Director Silvano Fares had the honour of meeting His Majesty King Charles III of England at the gardens of the British Ambassador's Residence in Rome.
🤴🔬 During the meeting, the King witnessed demonstrations of scientific methodologies and measurement tools employed by the global network of Living Labs of the Circular Bioeconomy Alliance (CBA).
👥 Among the participants, in addition to Fares, was a delegation of researchers, including Carlo Calfapietra, Director of CNR-IRET, CNR Coordinator of the National Biodiversity Future Centre (NBFC) and Italian Focal Point of ICOS-Italy, and Dario Papale, Head of the Ecosystem Thematic Centre of ICOS at CNR-IRET.
📑 The scientists highlighted the importance of Living Labs for the regeneration of landscapes and the National Biodiversity Future Centre (NBFC), a project of significant relevance to biodiversity, with the #CNR as the proposing entity.

🍇 ISAFOM AND IPCB present at Vinitaly with a circular economy project on wine-making waste
🚮 In view of the transition to a circular economy, the words 'waste' and 'discard' are transformed into 'resource' and 'reuse'. Everything has a value that we are not fully aware of today and it is up to us to understand and know how to exploit the potential of these new resources.
🪵At the same time, achieving environmental sustainability can be done in several ways and one of them is to switch from fossil to renewable resource use.
🧫In this work we report on the study concerning the realisation and characterisation of composite blends of a biopolymer, cellulose acetate, containing a filler derived from wine production waste, i.e. grape marc, for its potential application in agriculture as a mulch, replacing the current PVC used in this sector, with the prospect of using materials that are closer to the earth and that can make a contribution to achieving a more sustainable reality.
🔬All this research is conducted within the framework of the Agritech NRP thanks to the collaboration between the institutes #CNR_ISAFOM e #CNR_IPBC present at Vinitaly with Dr Nello Russo

Mission
Study and analysis of physical, chemical and biological processes that determine the functioning and dynamics of the agro-ecosystems in Mediterranean climate environmentsThe aim is to improve the quality and quantity of production, optimise the use of natural resources and enhance the functions of agricultural and forestry systems. Development and application of research methods and advanced technological innovations for monitoring and forecasting the impacts and responses of agricultural and forest ecosystems to anthropogenic and climatic pressures.
ISAFOM is part of the CNR's Department of Bio-Agro-Food Sciences and has a 'critical mass' of 89 units distributed between the sites of Portici - NA (headquarters), Catania, Rende (CS), and Perugia.
