Education:

  • Degree in Agricultural Science and Technology from the University of Catania (2004)
  • Licensed to practise as a Chartered Agronomist (2005)
  • PhD in 'Productivity of cultivated plants' at the University of Catania (2009)

Main research interests:

  • Safeguarding biodiversity;
  • Morphological and chemical characterisation of typical Mediterranean plants for the establishment of clones with high health value;
  • Development of shelf-life improvement techniques for the production of IV range food products;
  • Characterisation of field residual biomass and oilseed species extraction flours from the biodiesel agro-energy chain;
  • Identification and valorisation of molecules of nutraceutical interest;
  • Study of abiotic stresses for the production of substances with high antioxidant activity;
  • In vitro propagation of annual and polyannual species;
  • Phytoremediation of soils contaminated by heavy metals.

Laboratory/field activities:

  • Collection, characterisation and conservation of native Sicilian germplasm;
  • Quantitative and qualitative analysis of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity of species typical of the Mediterranean environment;
  • In vitro propagation of tree and herbaceous plant species;
  • Ultrasonic and Randall extraction;
  • Quantitative and qualitative analysis of bioaccumulation in plants of heavy metals;
  • Setting up and managing collection fields;

 

Research support activities:

  • He collaborated in the activities of 11 research projects and 3 agreements with companies and universities;
  • He assisted in the preparation, submission and implementation of research projects on national and international calls;
  • She has been a tutor for several internships and co-rapporteur for dissertations in collaboration with the University of Catania;
  • He has been a member of the scientific and organisational committee of several conferences
