Education and training

  • PhD in Enhancement and management of agro-forestry resources, specialising in Applied Pedology, awarded by the University of Naples 'Federico II', with a thesis entitled: 'Insight into the mechanisms of soil structure formation: an experimental approach using soil micromorphology and image analysis' on 24/01/2012,
  • Degree in Biological Sciences, curriculum "Biodiversity, conservation and environmental quality", awarded by the University of Naples "Federico II" with a thesis entitled "Innovative investigations on soil structuring" on 28/10/2008.

Research interests

  • 3D image analysis of porous media - High resolution plant phenotyping - Agri-food Imaging - Soil Physics - Material analysis of cultural heritage

Recent research activities

  • Use of X-ray microtomography and micromorphological techniques followed by two- and three-dimensional image analysis in plant phenotyping and soil physics.
  • High-resolution phenotyping of different grain genotypes of pseudocereals of growing economic impact and nutritional interest such as quinoa and amaranth, hemp seed leaves and hemp canapulo, legume seeds and leaves, tomato seeds. Investigations into correlations between seed morphometric traits and nutritional or functional properties.
  • Characterisation of carrot seeds germinated under microgravity conditions in order to study the effect of water and nutrients on root growth orientation.
  • Study of the physical and biological factors of soil structure formation by means of experimental laboratory tests carried out at the CNR-ISAFOM.
  • Analysis of the degradation of building materials of monuments at some cultural heritage sites.
