Degree in Agricultural Sciences
Qualification to teach in the Competitive Sector 07/C1 Agricultural, Forest and Biosystems Engineering - I Fascia
Main research interests:
- Soil water motion processes; Physics-based simulation models of water and solute motion in the soil-plant-atmosphere system; Decision support systems; Scale processes; Study of volcanic soils.
- Measurement of hydraulic properties: laboratory and field measurement techniques and their parameterisation;
- Sensing and measurement of soil variables (water content, potential, etc.) through point systems (e.g. TDR) and geospatial (e.g. geophysical, airborne and ground-based methods);
- Microscale relationships between porosity determined by image analysis and hydraulic properties of soils;
- scaling-up procedures of soil properties and variables measured at laboratory, field and spatial scales;
- Modelling transport processes, water stress and plant growth in the soil-plant-atmosphere system;
- Study and modelling of solute transport mechanisms, pollutants and in particular nitrates of agricultural origin;
- study of soil heterogeneity and spatial variability (e.g. geostatistics, neural networks);
- zoning procedures, mapping and relationships between product quality and the physical environment;
- effects of climate change on the agro-environment through the integrated use of simulation models at the local scale and statistical downscaling procedures of weather data;
- web application of Decision Support Systems (DSS). Integration of spatialisation techniques at farm (e.g. precision agriculture) and spatial scales with physically-based modelling for multifunctional agri-environment management.
Laboratory/field activities:
Laboratory: Measurement of soil hydraulic properties and solute transport parameters; inflow-outflow tests; soil particle size distribution;
Camp: Monitoring of soil potential, water content and solute concentration and weather variables in experimental sites cultivated with vines, wheat, maize, etc. Geophysical measurements for the geospatial study of soil properties.
