CNR ISAFOM

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

Gaetano Pellicone was born on June 19th , 1978 in Reggio Calabria, Italy

He graudated in Forest and Evironmental Systems from the “Mediterranea” University, Italy in 2004 (dissertation title: Studio dell’umidità del suolo in rimboschimenti di pino d’Aleppo, sottoposto a diradamento e di pino domestico). In 2008 he reveived a Second level Master Degree in Geographic Information System and Remote Sensing from Milan University Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences. In 2018 he received a Ph.D in Sciences, Technologies and Biotechnologies for Sustainability (PhD Thesis title: Climate change mitigation by forests: a case study on the role of management on carbon dynamics of a pine forest in South Italy).

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

  • Since October 2023, he has been a Technologist at the National Research Council of Italy - Institute for Agricultural and Forest Systems in the Mediterranean (CNR-ISAFOM).
  • Research fellow on a project: PON03_00024_1 Public-Private Laboratory for Innovative Technologies with High Environmental Sustainability in the Forest-Wood-Energy Processing Chain - Ambi.Tec.Fil.Legno – ALForLab”;
  • Research fellow on a project: ERA-NET COFUND WATERWORKS 2015 - Innovative Options for Integrated Water Resources Management in the Mediterranean (INNOMED), funded by the European Commission;
  • Fixed-Term Collaboration Agreement (Co.Co.Co) with the 'Mediterranea' University of Reggio Calabria for the implementation of a geographical database with PostgreSQL/PostGIS;
  • Grant Agreement on PONa3_00363, I-AMICA – Infrastruttura di Alta tecnologia per il Monitoraggio Integrato Climatico-Ambientale;
  • Grant Agreement on LIFE09 ENV/IT000078 Managing forests for multiple purposes: carbon, biodiversity and socio-economics wellbeing – MANFOR”.

MAIN RESEARCH INTERESTS

The scientific production is mainly focused on themes related to the analysis of climate on historical time series, linked to the effects of climate change on the forest biome through the use of predictive forest models and the development of scripts aimed at the analysis and validation of climate trends and indices.

Furthermore, the research activity has focused on the use of innovative tools related to forest planning and management at different scales, with particular reference to forest inventory applications and monitoring issues through the use of dendrometric techniques and the integration of mapping tools and Remote Sensing for data analysis.

Another aspect of my activities involves managing of weather stations in an experimental basin located in Sila (CS, Italy), known as “Bonis”. This management entails ensuring their regular maintenance, real-time data transmission, data analysis, and forecasting, as well as fostering collaboration and data sharing.

PUBBLICATIONS

My pubblications cover various aspects of hydrology, forestry, and environmental management. In particular, analysis and application of various spatial interpolation techniques, modelling approaches for the analysis of environmental data, including rainfall and temperature.
