Mirko Cucina has a Master Science Degree in Environmental Biotechnologies at University of Perugia (2012) and a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences at University of Perugia (2016). His background concerns biomass valorisation and recovery through biological processes (anaerobic digestion, composting), environmental and agricultural chemistry, soil fertility, wastewater treatment, sludge treatment, microalgae cultivation, waste management and circular bioeconomy.
He has been working at University of Perugia (2016-2020) and University of Milan (2020-2022) before starting the current permanent position as Researcher at the Italian National Research Council (CNR) (Institute for Agricultural and Environmental Systems in the Mediterranean, Perugia, Italy) in 2022. Actually, his research focuses on circular bioeconomy approaches to recover energy and materials from wastes and by-products.
He participated in about 10 research project founded by competitive calls of National (Italian and Spanish) and European relevance. He is member of the Network for Biodigesters in Latin America and the Caribbean (RedBioLAC) and works with several foreign institutions (Polytechnic University of Catalunya - Spain, Industrial University of Santander – Colombia).
He is author of 25 scientific publications in indexed journals, 2 book chapters, 4 technical articles, and 32 contributions to scientific congresses (poster and oral contributions). He has supervised 5 Master’s Degree students at University of Perugia and University of Milan. He is topic editor of Agronomy (MDPI Publications) and has served as guest editor for 3 different MDPI journals (Agronomy, Recycling, Sustainability). In 2022, he gained the Scientific Qualification of Associate Professor in the scientific sector “Agricultural Chemistry”.
